What Do the Election Results Mean?

On October 31, 2014, in Politics, by An American

The Conservative Breakfast Group (CBG) will discuss the results of the 2014 gubernatorial election at our November 6 meeting. Will the Republicans gain control of the Senate? Will Bill Tilghman manage to unseat Andy Harris? Do the polls mean anything?

Bing has entered the election prediction business. They predict that Larry Hogan has less than a 1% chance of winning. This despite the fact his opponent led Maryland’s failed effort to build a health insurance web site, and the fact that the O’Malley/Brown administration has presided over a dismal economic record (BLS statistics show that employment growth in Maryland is 5th worst among all 50 states.)

Bing also predicts that Bill Tilghman has less than a 1% chance of winning. In fact, gerrymandering in Maryland is so thorough that all 8 incumbent US Representatives have a greater than 99% chance of winning, despite the polls that show only 14% of Americans approve of the job that Congress is doing.

How can this be? ? We would love to hear how you feel about these and other important issues highlighted by this year’s gubernatorial election.

Tom Timberman will discuss current events in the Middle East with CBG at their Thursday breakfast meeting on October 30. Tom is a former American diplomat with expertise in national security and foreign policy.

Remember those earlier Cold War days decades ago, when frightening people was reserved for defense budget time?  Usually in September-October, continuing on through spring and summer, generals and respected national security experts would suggest that all Soviet Soldiers were 10′ tall, Russian tank armies were poised to invade Germany through the Fulda Gap and nuclear war was an immediate and pressing threat. The purpose was to impress upon members of Congress and their constituents that only the US Armed Forces stood between Americans and Armageddon.  Once the Defense Budget was passed, Soviet soldiers returned to an average height of 5’8″ and life went on.   However, since 9/11, terrorism and wars and conflicts motivated by weird religious schisms, distant ethnic hatreds and the usual agendas of domination and profit are part of our daily electronic feed. They remind us we should be scared most of the time. But, should we?  And now an Ebola Epidemic is among us.

Where should ISIS rank in the past 150 years of Middle East violence, wars and conflicts, imperial clashes, colonization and oil?  And how worried should Americans be about it?
